New Report: "Motherhood and Pregnancy Behind Bars"

In May 2022, TCJE released a report that sheds light on the experiences of motherhood and pregnancy in Texas’ criminal legal system. “Motherhood and Pregnancy Behind Bars: Texas Must Rethink How It’s Treating Mothers and Families” includes data on women in U.S. and Texas prisons and jails, perspectives from formerly incarcerated women, an intersectional analysis of the effects of women’s incarceration on the larger community, and more. The report also includes a robust set of recommendations to support women who are currently in the system—through positive parent-child programming, improved conditions of confinement, and other strategies—and to keep women from entering the system altogether.
